Sky Sheds – What Do We Know?

Sky sheds are quite the peculiar lot when it comes to outdoor storage spaces. They’re usually not the go-to types by most homeowners upon considering additional spaces in their properties. As a matter of fact, they’re more of a hobbyist’s choice. Nevertheless, if you’re one who loves to look up and take a few moments of wonder upon the evening firmament then a sky shed should be a good choice for you.

If you’ve not yet acquainted yourself with a sky shed before, there are two main designs that would surface upon initial searching and inquiry. More often than not, you will encounter the terms “pod” and “roll-off roof” every now and then.

Sheds pod
A sky shed pod is like a miniature sky observatory that you see in TV programs and movies. It comes with a dome-like roof and a cylindrical bodice allowing only enough room for your telescope and yourself in its confines. Its preferred location is along a veranda or an open space on your lawn where it can be set in a position that’s favorable for sky viewing. The dome roof is constructed with a primary and a secondary fold. The secondary fold is rolled into the primary hence, making for an open area where you can point your telescope to and start looking up towards where your intended subjects lay sparkling and hanging.

Roof off

On the other hand, we also have what we would call roll-off roof sky sheds. At first glance, they would look as common as sheds come. They are built with treated walls and floorings and are normally made out of wooden materials. The said structure’s primary design composes of a four-walled working space with a roofless lanai that almost occupies the same area as that of the covered space. The most striking part of its design is its motor-powered sliding roof. Indeed, the roof moves across the entire space towards where the lanai’s blank ceiling is – or was formerly blank, in this case. Hence, you’re originally covered working space where you would shelter your telescope most of the time is then free for another star exploration escapade.

In most cases, owners have preferred the pod over the ROR for its practicality and ease of construction. All though, if you can afford it, a roll-off roof would be a better option to go for since it provides better space for utility and other purpose you might deem necessary for your needs.
